Streetscape Plan
FAB and Cooper Square Committee are leading a Streetscape Program for the East 4th Street Cultural District. After a participatory design process with residents, cultural groups, and businesses, we are proposing the following improvements:
- Promoting cultural resources & heritage: Since most visitors are unaware of the district’s diverse resources, we propose a system of signage, including information kiosks, lamppost banners, and historical markers.
- Improving access and safety: In consultation with DOT, we are looking into neckdowns and duratherm crosswalks to slow traffic and demarcate the district. To reduce crowding on the sidewalks, we propose replacing parking meters with muni-meters and creating a bump out at one problem area near New York Theatre Workshop and The Kraine Theater. We would also install lighting on the residential buildings to improve visibility and reduce criminal activity.
- Enhancing the public environment: Since there is overwhelming support for greening and beautification, we plan to plant more trees and flowers, install tree guards, and replace the current lampposts with a more suitable pole.
