FABLES | La siembra del hogar//Sowing Homes | 2016

Artist: Raul Ayala, with Fernanda Espinosa
Location: Extra Place
Spring 2016 (in conjunction with LES History Month)

La siembra del hogar//Sowing Homes looks back at the history of squatting here in the Lower East Side, celebrates the restorative power of community, and draws attention to the anchoring presence of women in community-building. Oral history accounts heavily inform the narrative of this work, including drawing upon interviews conducted by Amy Starecheski (Associate Director, Columbia University Oral History MA Program) for her book, Ours to Lose: When Squatters Became Homeowners in New York City.

For a more in-depth understanding about the context surrounding the work as well as the context surrounding the project, read their spotlight posts on FABRIC here and here.

This project is part of FABnyc’s ArtUp program.
