Extra Block

Historically, Dance Block has consisted of spaces solely on our block, East 4th Street, between 2nd Avenue and the Bowery; as of 2016, we are excited to activate new space opportunities – this time, off the block! These “extra blocks” will continue to provide greater access and foster deeper relationships between studio owners and dancemakers in the Lower East Side. These residencies, at $10/hr just like our Dance Block program, mean that Dance Blockers rehearse within a space at an agreed upon, predetermined schedule for an extended period of time, and in so doing, cultivating a consistent and reliable rapport.

Note: these paid-for residencies are in no way assigned in terms of artistic work quality or any formal application process; to express interest in participating in one of these  residencies, please get in touch with KT at kt@fabnyc.org. Rental hours are still subject to space availability and these residencies may not be available at the time of your inquiry.

Avenue C. Studio Resident Dance Blocker: CHRISTINANOEL & the CREATURE

belly-1-mail-sigChristinaNoel & The Creature is a Brooklyn based dance company comprised of dancers, musicians, and visual artists that focuses on creating a hybrid performance medium utilizing the dancers’ voices, bodies, as well as drawing from their perspectives. The resulting medium envelopes viewers visually and aurally in multi-textured environments derived from human connections and encounters. The Creature is dedicated to creating a space that facilitates dialogue and educational outreach by striving to expand conventional ideas of dance performance. The Creature is driven by Artistic Director & Choreographer, ChristinaNoel Reaves in collaboration with Visual Director & Composer Aeric Meredith-Goujon who participates actively in the creative process by generating original music for The Creature pieces.

ChristinaNoel & The Creature debuted in New York City at The Bessie Schoenberg Workshop in 2011 and has presented work at The Flamboyan at The Clemente, Judson Memorial Church, GAP Series, ITE Festival, The Irondale Theater, Teatro LaTEA, Triskelion Arts, Dance Theater of Ireland, Shawbrook School Ireland, the DanceNOW Festival Joe’s PUB, LaMama Theater, The Tank, Legros Women in Dance Studio Series, Fete de L’Hurricaine Festival, Dixon Placeʼs Crossing Boundaries Festivals, Home Audio, and The Hoover Dam Collective Performances. ChristinaNoel originated “Rapture Of The Heroine (guurrrl)” on Zoetic Dance Ensemble of Atlanta in 2012/2013. May 2013 brought The Creature’s inaugural independent concert at Teatro La Tea followed by a successful sophomore season at The Irondale Theater in May 2014. The Creature was invited to present a TedX performance at Martha’s Vineyard in August 2014 on the theme “Insanity, Genius, and The Creative Process”. May 2015 and 2016 held successful third and fourth independent concerts at the Flamboyan Theater at the Clemente Soto Velez Center.

The dance/theater piece, entitled Belly, is a panoptic review of our treatment of others. ChristinaNoel & The Creature are working on re-staging the piece during their Extra Block residency. Through forced interactions and reactions The Creature’s fluctuating proximity reflects a closeness and camaraderie while juxtaposing an inability to fully realize empathy for another human being.  All this is done through the lens of comedy and tragedy, and the depths of white privilege and institutional racism. In the end the question becomes; how can we continue to reorganize our own perceptions and differences to continually strive toward mutual understanding?
