SUSTAIN was previously a suite of projects that FAB presented to increase environmental awareness, sustainability, and money-saving greening efforts for member organizations and individual artists in the LES. Among these projects, the research and implementation of creative solutions to the challenges of urban sustainability on the block (see: model block brochure) and the now beloved Load OUT! emerged and remains strong.
This fall, we extend Load OUT! activities into a broader day of SUSTAIN, encouraging recycling, reusing, and repurposing in our daily lives. Co-presented by FABNYC & Downtown Art, activities include textile-making workshops as well as an opportunity to participate in the NYC Cultural Plan!
Here is what you can expect from the day:

esa hosts – The Rag Upcycle
11am-2pm @ DTA Lot, 19 E. 3rd Street
Learn to upcycle a beautiful handmade art piece out of what you might otherwise think of as trash. Create everything from a pot holder to a dreamcatcher out of repurposed fabric scraps donated from the cutting room floors of local fashion houses and designers. Think zero waste every day.
Create your own Kooker led by Lexy Ho-Tai & brought to you by FAB
12pm – 2pm @ DTA Lot, 19 E. 3rd Street
Kookerville is the world where your inner child goes to when it’s been lost. It’s a world filled with play, curiosity and, of course, KOOKERS! All Kookers are made from found/ recycled materials, and spontaneously bring joy all around New York City!
This is a workshop materiality, sustainability, and collaboration: Collaboratively create a Kooker on site, using recycled materials readily available and learn to rethink materials and develop your own unique textiles with Lexy Ho-Tai. You may also bring materials such as old fabrics and bottle caps to contribute to a Kooker. Come play!
8pm – midnight @ DTA Theater, Enter from 70 E. 4th Street
$10 – buy tickets here
Fashion runway meets art exhibition as esa brings Study NY, zero waste daniel, and Lindy Fox together to showcase their beautiful and sustainable pieces on live models who will be just as much part of the crowd as you! Ask questions and create conversation with ethically conscious community members amidst live music, drinks, fashion, and art!
