Once again, FABnyc is hosting Load OUT! – a creative recycling and repurposing riot during which we bring together gently used materials from arts organizations throughout the East Village and LES. Take home costumes, props, and furniture for your next artistic endeavor! This edition of Load OUT! is part of SUSTAIN – a day encouraging recycling, reusing, and repurposing in your everyday life, presented by FABnyc in partnership with Downtown Art.
In 2010, we noticed that local theaters were “loading out” sets and materials directly into dumpsters after productions ended their runs. Not only were the materials being disposed of inefficiently and unsustainably, but were often of great value to other artists. As a creative response, FABnyc initiated “Load OUT!” inviting neighborhood arts and cultural groups, non-profits, and community members to donate sets, costumes, props and office equipment they no longer needed, to be made available to other artists.
While we accept items mostly from cultural institutions, as individual contributors, please visit the Load OUT! page for a list of items we can and cannot accept. A good rule of thumb is: nothing soiled, nothing large.
In this edition, we are also excited to have Lexy Ho-Tai lead a Kreate Your Own Kooker workshop at the DTA lot on 19 E. 3rd Street lot, with other fashion & textile activities (see below) hosted by Downtown Art! Kookerville is the world where your inner child goes to when it’s been lost. It’s a world filled with play, curiosity and, of course, KOOKERS! All Kookers are made from found/ recycled materials, and spontaneously bring joy all around New York City!
This is a workshop materiality, sustainability, and collaboration: Collaboratively create a Kooker on site, using recycled materials readily available and learn to rethink materials and develop your own unique textiles with Lexy Ho-Tai. You may also bring materials such as old fabrics and bottle caps to contribute to a Kooker. Come play!
Finally, we’re also glad to welcome to the lot GrowNYC & Transportation Alternatives – learn how we can think about our everyday comings and goings as a larger ecosystem here in NYC.
Admission: FREE for artists & students / $5 for general public.
