The settlement house model came to New York when the city was at critical mass. People needed space for their dreams to grow and a place for their roots to gather.  In 1916, Grand St. Settlement opened its doors, creating a community that would transcend place and time. What began as neighbors helping neighbors became a family.

Access to Space and Resources

At Grand St. Settlement, they empower individuals and strengthen families, enabling them to join a close, supportive community. In response to your needs, offering a range of activities, programs and services for all ages in their Community Centers and neighborhood locations in both Manhattan and Brooklyn.

  • Single Stop USA: In just one visit, meet one-on-one to get connected with the things you need most: low-cost healthcare, nutrition assistance, and financial and legal aid and more! Get help with tax preparation, screenings for benefits and entitlements, accessing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and receiving legal and financial counseling.
  • Lower East Side Employment Network: a part of the Lower East Side Employment Network, a collaboration of experienced workforce development agencies that partner with local companies to recruit, hire, and retain quality employees. Through LESEN, we’ll coach, train, and support you throughout the job search and placement process.
  • High School Equivalency Exam: adult education classes are always free – and feature flexible times and childcare options for busy parents
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages: free classes go beyond stepping up your English skills – tackle some of the communication barriers you might be facing as you work to navigate city, housing or health care systems

Other Programs

GrandLo Café is operated by—and for—local community members and features a youth job training program, cultural and community events, and a communal gathering space. Together, these components contribute to the cafe’s double bottom line: to generate revenue to advance our work in both the Lower East Side and Brooklyn, and to extend to New Yorkers the invitation to be a part of a new wave of community-building.

Special Programs for Youth

At Grand St. Settlement, they guide children from birth to age five and their parents through the most important years, ensuring school readiness and nurturing a life-long love of learning.

    • Early Head Start (expecting parents and babies from Birth through age three): From a healthy pregnancy to family teamwork, get everyone ready for success with both home and center-based services. This program is free for eligible families.
    • Head Start (for ages three and four): Bright colors, dynamic learning, and a focus on nutrition and wellness all in 3 languages advance school readiness.
    • EarlyLearn NYC (Head Start and and child care for ages two through five): A safe, caring environment gives children full-day learning and play, helping them and their parents learn, grow and achieve. This program is free for eligible families and a sliding-scale fee is charged for extended hours
    • Universal Pre Kindergarten (for the year before Kindergarten): Get school ready! Grand Street Settlement provides outstanding Pre-K education and help each family find the right Kindergarten for their child.

Grand Street Settlement offers youth programming and activities at their Community Centers, partner school sites, and other neighborhood locations.

    • Afterschool: Grand St. Settlement offers afterschool programming as part of the Comprehensive After School System (COMPASS), a nationally acclaimed network for school aged youth from kindergarten through high school graduation. From homework help and mentoring to robotics, dance and recreation, there is always a lot goin
    • Summer Camp: The tradition of summer camp has been alive at Grand St. Settlement for nearly 100 years.
    • Project Speak Out Loud: Project SOL is a safe space to educate, empower and advocate for LGBTQ youth and their allies. Resources and support, free events and workshops, and the opportunity to become a Peer Educator make Project SOL an inclusive and fun community.
    • Americorps: Grand St. Settlement’s AmeriCorps team brings over 30 youth together to lead initiatives and service projects while building job skills and experience.
    • The Clubhouse Network: Grand St. Settlement is a proud member of The Clubhouse Network, which provides creative, safe, and free out-of-school learning environments for young people from underserved communities. They work with adult mentors to explore their own ideas, develop new skills, and build confidence in themselves through the use of technology

Special Programs for Seniors

Grand Street Settlement seniors create a home away from home that reflects the cultures and wisdom of their diverse experiences. The result is a second family of leaders, learners and advocates that make our community strong and vibrant.

  • Grand Coalition of Seniors: 80 Pitt Street Community Center hosts this hub of activities, services and support for seniors. Providing communal and nutritious meals twice daily throughout the week, and host an array of health and wellness, educational, cultural, and social activities. From celebrations to advocacy initiatives, this diverse group of life-long learners bring the buzz to our Headquarters
  • Baruch Elder Services Team (B.E.S.T.):  The BEST program brings medical, social and support services to over 700 older residents of the Bernard M. Baruch Houses (a Naturally Occurring Retirement Community). A comfortable lounge, activity room and outdoor garden allow members to socialize and take part in programming that includes arts and crafts, bingo, gardening, Latin dance, mental health support groups, yoga, Tai-Chi and more. Peer volunteers visit homebound seniors and provide escorts to medical and other appointments.
  • Senior Housing: Grand St. Settlement’s 74-unit apartment building provides homes to 110 seniors, along with supportive services to address their needs, a beautiful garden and shared community spaces.
